It will soon be easier for girls and women across the Macarthur to play football. A $1 million grant to Macarthur FC under the Australian Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program will remove participation barriers to women and girls.

Macarthur FC It will use the money to deliver football development and coaching programs for women and girls in the Macarthur region, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse or Indigenous backgrounds.

Dr Mike Freelander, the Federal Member for Macarthur, who helped secure the funding, has congratulated Macarthur FC for its successful application.

“I am confident its project will have a very positive impact for women and girls in our community,’’ Dr Freelander said.

Dr Freelander shows off his soccer skills.

“Every person has the right to enjoy sport, in their own way and at the level that suits them.”

More than 660 applications for funding were received.

Funding is being offered to initiatives nationwide, with a focus on women and girls who face additional barriers to participation.

Assessment of applications under the facilities stream of the Play Our Way Grant Program to support construction of new and modified sporting facilities, playing areas and spaces, is still in progress.

“Play Our way is all about creating greater opportunities for women and girls to have an equal chance to get the fun, satisfaction and health benefits sport offers,’’ sport minister Anika Wells, said.

“The huge response to this grant opportunity, and the range of great project ideas, show that Australian communities want to be more supportive of women and girls in sport.”
