The annual South West Sydney Academy of Sport golf day is more about community than winning some of the prizes up for grabs.

The 2024 academy corporate golf day, held last Friday at the Campbelltown Golf Club’s Glen Alpine course, had all that and much more.

“The day is definitely about the academy being able to give back to our community partners,” said academy CEO Gerry Knights, who welcomed the 15 participating teams prior to the 8.30am start of play.

“Without our many partners, we would not be able to provide the quality of sport programs and services to athletes within our local community, so thank you,” he said.

The day was a testament to the power of teamwork, where focus on making the final putt was seamlessly intertwined with hearty laughter, even more so as each competitor tallied up their scorecards over a generous Australian barbecue lunch and drinks back in the 19th hole.

“One team had a great story of losing over a dozen golf balls coming across the final, let’s say water hazard,” Mr Knights said.

Both the event partners, Kelly+Partners Chartered Accountants and the Campbelltown Golf Club entered teams on the day, along with 13 other corporate representatives from South West Sydney.

The academy’s 2025 golf squad of Priya Singh, Jack Harod, Kobey Thomas, Hazel Kruger and Ariana Abella took part alongside the corporate contingent.

However it was athlete Libby Newcombe who made the best of the day, taking out the female longest drive honour. [Libby is pictured putting above.]

“The golf day provides a unique opportunity for our athletes to participate alongside our partners, in not just sharing their journey as an athlete, but providing a few tips along the way,” Mr Knights said.

Which just confirmed once again that community spirit was the winner on the day.
