The federal government has announced that it will spend almost $2 billion on new and existing infrastructure projects, including several in South Western Sydney.
These include the Appin Road – St Johns Road intersection upgrade ($22.5 million) and planning for both the Cambridge Avenue upgrade and Spring Farm Parkway Stage 2.
There’s also a $50 million allocation for the Appin Road corridor project (Appin to Gilead).
Another $20 million will be set aside – in partnership with the NSW Government – for the business case of connecting the South West Sydney rail line with the new airport at Badgerys Creek, due to open in late 2026.
As part of the funding the scope of the planning will be expanded to include consideration of extending the line to the Macarthur region.
Almost $159 million is being allocated towards the final business case for stage one of the Western Sydney Freight Line, planning for Western Sydney Roads Future and the Eastern Ring Road and Badgerys Creek Road South.
A further $100 million has been allocated for rapid bus infrastructure linking South West Sydney to the new airport
The Albanese Government says these critical investments in Western Sydney will cement its future as a hub for growth and a place of opportunity.
Local MPs have welcomed the $1.9 billion funding, which will be part of next week’s federal budget, the third delivered by the Albanese Government.
“This is what I have been advocating for since I was elected, and it is really great that an Albanese Labor Government is making it a reality,’’ says Anne Stanley, the member for Werriwa.
“The Albanese Labor Government is delivering the infrastructure that our region deserves after a decade of neglect.
“This investment in our roads will ease congestion and ensure our community benefits from the growing economic opportunities of our region.’’
Two state MPs, Nathan Hagarty (Leppington) and Charisma Kaliyanda (Liverpool) have also given the thumbs up to the new infrastructure funding.
“This is a big win for residents in South Western Sydney,” says Mr Hagarty.
“These upgrades will go far in cutting congestion, opening up transport links to the airport, and giving industry the confidence to co-invest in upcoming developments in the airport precinct.
“Road infrastructure in our part of the world was left underfunded and in disrepair following 12 years of neglect, so it’s good to see state and federal governments working hand in hand to fix it,’’ Mr Hagarty said.
“This funding is a win that will bust gridlock on our roads and get Western Sydney moving,’’ said Ms Kaliyanda said.
“For too long, governments at all levels have been slow to the draw on delivering vital transport connections for our growing suburbs. Today’s news shows that this is changing.
“The forthcoming opening of the new airport presents a massive prospect for Western Sydneysiders. This announcement will ensure that our communities can unlock those opportunities.’’
