An interesting – and important – new campaign will launch across Campbelltown this August. The campaign invites residents to take one simple action that could make a lasting difference for our community and the environment.
Take a Minute Before You Bin It is a campaign that encourages residents to pause before they bin something and take a moment to choose the right one.
It is essentially highlighting the power of small changes that collectively deliver significant environmental benefits.
Campbelltown Council says that recent household bin audits revealed that around one in every four items placed in household recycling bins doesn’t belong there, while around 8 percent of material placed in general waste (landfill) bins could have been recycled instead.
“Life is busy, and for most of us, using our household bin is just another part of our daily routine. This campaign is about encouraging everyone to take a moment before they put something in the bin, because one small moment to pause can make a big difference,” says Campbelltown Mayor Darcy Lound.
“When thousands of people each take a minute to choose the right bin, those small actions add up. Together we can reduce waste to landfill, recover more valuable resources and build a more sustainable Campbelltown,’’ he said.
Rather than focusing on what people are doing wrong, the campaign celebrates the power of collective action showing that when a community takes small steps together, the impact can be significant.
Over the coming months residents will see the Take a Minute Before You Bin It featured across council’s new waste collection trucks, community events, digital platforms and other prominent locations throughout Campbelltown, creating a recognisable message.
Council’s resource recovery and waste team will also be hosting community pop-ups, helping residents build confidence in making the right bin choices.
