“Campbelltown – Isn’t it fantastic to see schoolboy rugby back in the West” That was the glowing verdict from NSW Western Sydney Rugby coordinator Simon Kacimaiwai as he watched a double-header unfold at the Showground, the spiritual home of Campbelltown rugby, reports ANDREW CHOICE.

On show were local heavyweights Airds High School taking on Epping High School in both the Under 16s and Open age divisions.

The fixtures are part of a brilliant new initiative introduced by NSW Rugby this year aimed at unearthing the next generation of Western Sydney rugby talent.

The concept has been an overwhelming success: a thriving 10-school competition played on a traditional home-and-away basis, all building toward a blockbuster finals series at the end of July, hosted by the Penrith Emus.

NSW Rugby representatives on the sidelines were reportedly glowing in their praise, deeply impressed by the raw skill, athleticism, and passion on display.

It also proved to be a red-letter day for Airds High School, who have thrown themselves into the new competition with immense pride and are already reaping the rewards.

The school walked away with a clean sweep in both grades, solidifying their status as genuine title contenders.

In the Under 16s, in an absolute grandstand finish, Airds showed immense composure under pressure.

With the clock ticking down and the scores locked tight, a brilliant late try broke Epping hearts and sealed a thrilling, hard-fought victory.

The Open age fixture was a completely different story. Airds took control from the opening whistle, dominating territory and possession. They showed clinical finishing to run away with the match, never giving Epping a look-in.

With both teams securing crucial competition points, Airds High School has firmly cemented its position in the top four across both age groups as the finals approach.

It was a spectacular afternoon of schoolboy rugby. Huge congratulations must go to the NSW Rugby organizers for driving this initiative, and to the dedicated school staff who made the day possible.

Grassroots rugby in the West is officially alive and kicking.
