Earlier this month a local police officer visited Blairmount Public School to talk to all students about road safety.
But what this school really needs is a safety crossing at Clydesdale Drive.
So far it has been near misses for students, teachers and parents who have to walk across Clydesdale Drive every day.
Concerned that a child may soon be injured or worse, members of the school community contacted their local MP, Greg Warren, and asked for his help to get a school crossing installed.
This week in state parliament the Campbelltown MP asked the education minister – for the third time this year – to act and have a crossing installed.
In February the government told Mr Warren police presence around the school during pick up and drop off times would be increased.
However, there was no commitment for a crossing.
Mr Warren subsequently wrote for the second time to the education minister to reinforce the need for a designated school crossing on Clydesdale Drive.
Fed up with the lack of real action from the government, this week Mr Warren tabled a notice of motion to further highlight the serious concerns parents have for their children who attend Blairmount Public.
The three part notice of motion “notes the serious concerns regarding students at Blairmount Public School crossing the road near the school on Clydesdale Drive;
“Acknowledges the representations made both by myself and the school community regarding the need for a school crossing on Clydesdale Drive;
“Urges the minister to act on those representations and establish a school crossing on Clydesdale Drive for students, parents and staff at Blairmount Public School’’.
“The request from the school community and myself was clear – a crossing is the only measure that will ensure students, parents and staff can cross Clydesdale Drive before and after school safely,” Mr Warren said.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children and that is something I have reinforced with Minister Mitchell.
“There are genuine fears that it is only a matter of time before a serious incident occurs unless the crossing is established.
“I truly hope the minister re-evaluates the request, acknowledges the seriousness of this situation, and establishes the crossing on Clydesdale Drive.”
