Two men were arrested, a further two were taken to hospital and two police officers were assaulted during last night’s NRL match at Campbelltown Sports Stadium between Wests Tigers and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

About 7.50pm a fight had broke out involving rival supporters, and when police tried to intervene one officer punched in the head and another in the face.

A further two men were injured with one being taken by ambulance to Liverpool Hospital with suspected concussion, and a second man taken by ambulance to Campbelltown Hospital suffering facial injuries.

Additional assistance was sought from neighbouring commands with officers attached to Campbelltown City PAC, South West Metropolitan Operations Support Group and the Dog Unit attending.

A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with affray, two counts of assaulting police, and resisting arrest. He has been granted conditional bail to appear in Campbelltown Local Court on June 12.

A 28-year-old man was arrested for common assault and will be issued with a court attendance notice.

Four people were evicted from the stadium.

The injured officers have been treated for cuts and bruising.

Wests Tigers, who lost the match 22-12, have apologized for the incident.

“We are aware of incidents that occurred during our Round 11 match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Campbelltown Sports Stadium,’’ the club said in a media statement issued this morning.

“The club is investigating, [and] once we have the full security and police reports we will act accordingly.

“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated by the club, and we apologise to all those caught up in the situations, especially to the police officers and anyone else hurt in the events.’’
