The Old Picton Post Office is the town’s most recognisable building. Located on the corner of Menangle Road and Argyle Street, its imposing structure is hard to miss for anyone entering Picton.

The historic building hasn’t changed much on the outside, but inside it is now almost as good as new after undergoing restoration.

It was completely renovated as part of the makeover, which included re-roofing, kitchen upgrade, making bathroom facilities accessible, installation of a smart access door system, new steel emergency exit stairwell, access ramp upgrade and a lift for disability access to the second floor.

The Old Post Office had suffered flood damage in recent years.

Combined with decay due to its age, it had reached a stage where restoration was a necessity.

As a result of the work, the building is ready to continue playing a big part in the life of Picton and Wollondilly.

It will be used as a community working space and coordinated by WorkLife, a leading operator of regional coworking spaces.

Speaking after a ceremony to mark the completion of the work (pictured), Mayor Matt Gould said the Old Picton Post Office holds a special place as the heart of Picton.

“I’m delighted to see it restored and ready to serve in the next phase of its life,’’ he said.

“Originally built in the late 19th century, it’s an amazing adaptive reuse of such an historical building and it is now completely accessible and the perfect space for local business workers,’’ he said.

“The decision to repurpose the Old Picton Post Office as a coworking space is a strategic priority for council.

“By supporting the development of coworking spaces, the Shire will attract and retain talent, create new jobs, and stimulate economic activity.

“It’s great to see the level of interest that’s already been expressed in using the space.”
