A new pedestrian refuge will be constructed on Church Street in Appin, adjacent to a bus stop and near Kennedy Street.
The new refuge provides a safer pedestrian waiting area between lanes and will allow for easier navigation for people wanting to cross the road.
Supporting the pedestrian refuge will be new line marking and road narrowing works to slow traffic through the area, while improvements to the pedestrian footpath will also be undertaken.
Improvements were made to assist pedestrians trying to cross and alert drivers to the potential of people trying to cross.
Works will be undertaken at night from Sunday, September 15 and expected to be completed by month’s end, weather permitting.
There will be no work on Friday and Saturday nights, but motorists are advised work zone restrictions will be in place as work is undertaken.
The State Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren, who has pushed for the funding required, has welcomed the green light for a new pedestrian refuge.
“Given the serious community concern, I took immediate action due to the urgency of the issue and the level of importance for the people of Appin and for all road users,” he said.
“This new infrastructure will not only alert motorists, but also help pedestrians to ensure they cross Church Street safely,” said Mr Warren, who is pictured above on the site of the upgrade.
