No footpath forces Ethan to walk 2km on the road to get to school

Every morning 10 year old Ethan Forwood walks two kilometres from his home in Airds to school in Bradbury.

There are hardly any footpaths and no crossings whatsoever for Ethan, his sister Isabella and mother Alex as they make the trek to Bradbury public school twice a day.

It means most of the distance they cover by walking on the road, putting themselves at risk of being hit by a vehicle.

The only crossing is located outside the school.

Ethan decided to do something about it and penned a letter to local MP Greg Warren.

After explaining the problem, Ethan wrote: “I would like you to come and have a look for yourself.’’

And that’s exactly what Mr Warren did, and much more besides.

Mr Warren joined Ethan, his sister Isabella and mother Alex in their trek between their home in Airds and school in Bradbury.

He has since contacted both Campbelltown Council and the education minister to make them aware of Ethan’s predicament.

“Ethan took the time to write to me, so I made it a priority to visit Ethan and discuss his concerns,” he said.

“The issue of a lack of footpaths just doesn’t impact Ethan and his family, but also other students, parents, carers, teachers and staff.

“I raised the issue with Campbelltown Council and they are eager to speak to Ethan.

“I also wrote to the minister for education to reiterate that the NSW Government has a duty of care to ensure students can get to and from school safely.

“I would encourage anyone else – whether they be students, parents, carers, teachers or staff – that may have similar concerns, to contact myself or my office.”
