Planning to relocate the Campbelltown city centre library services has started ahead of construction of a world class healthcare innovation hub and cancer care centre on the Hurley Street site.
Building works will soon begin on the first stage of the Genesis Care health facility on the vacant land beside the 31 year old HJ Daley Library and the Namut Early Learning Centre.
The second phase of the project, which extends across the site that currently accommodates the library, early learning centre and a community garden, is scheduled to start in September next year.
Council is exploring a range of nearby options for the provision of library services while planning continues for a permanent purpose built, contemporary library to be located in the Campbelltown CBD as part of the Reimagining Campbelltown City Centre Master Plan and the proposed South West Sydney Community and Justice Precinct.
Council will be in communication with families attending Namut Early Learning Centre while options are considered for the continued provision of early learning services.
“Our libraries are more than just buildings, they are educational institutions, places for people to gather, preserve our history and share knowledge,” Mayor George Greiss said.
“Since it opened in 1991, the existing library has provided a great service to our community, but now is the time to look to the future and establish a new building that acknowledges the changing nature of libraries and that will meet the needs of our growing population moving forward,” Cr Greiss said.
“Through our library strategic plan, the community told us they wanted more programs, access to technology and space from their local libraries, and the new city library will be a key step towards delivering on these aspirations,” he said.
Community consultation for the master planning of the new library will be held in May.
Council says it will also work with the Campbelltown Community Garden volunteers to find a suitable new location for the community garden.
