The Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport project has reached new heights with the completion of the 3.2-kilometres viaduct link to the future Luddenham station.
The new 23-kilometre metro line will link the new airport with the main Sydney rail line at St Marys.
It’s important to point out that there are no concrete plans yet for a metro rail link south from the airport to Liverpool and Macarthur.
Once complete, the 23km northern link will mean it’ll take passengers five minutes to travel from the airport to Bradfield, approximately 15 minutes from the airport to St Marys and approximately 20 minutes from Bradfield to St Marys where passengers can connect to the rest of Sydney’s rail network.
The viaduct structure is a critical part of the metro alignment between Orchard Hills and Luddenham and has been constructed to take metro services over key locations including the Warragamba pipelines, Blaxland Creek, and Luddenham Road.
This viaduct will be part of a mix of underground tunnels, ground level railway and elevated railway.
Completing the viaduct also included completing the base of Luddenham Station, the only station located on a viaduct 13.5 metres above ground.
Luddenham Station is one of six new stations for the metro railway line that will become a crucial connection for travellers visiting the new international airport.
It will also open up local housing and business opportunities.
The next stage of this project will include laying track along the entire 23-kilometre alignment.
In related news, from this Friday (December 6), Transport for NSW will be reducing the speed limit along the 5.5-kilometre length of Badgerys Creek Road between The Northern Road and Pitt Street to 60 km/h.
With the thoroughfare connecting the Pitt Street roundabout and The Northern Road becoming increasingly busy with freight movements and construction vehicles, Badgerys Creek Road is also set to see increases in pedestrians as the precinct around Western Sydney International Airport develops in the lead up to its opening in 2026.
To improve safety for everyone, Transport for NSW is asking motorists to allow an extra minute when travelling along the entire length by observing the new limits.
While reducing the speed limit from 80 to 60km/h will improve safety throughout the precinct, Transport for NSW will also undertake important road repairs which will include widening, line marking and resurfacing work in 2025.
This work may see temporary lane closures where motorists are asked to observe signs and reduced speed.
Transport for NSW will also be reviewing bus routes and stops along Badgerys Creek Road to ensure better accessibility and safety.
The work is part of a wider program which will support safety upgrades along Elizabeth Drive, the construction of the toll-free M12 Motorway, upgrades along Mamre Road and fast tracked Fifteenth Avenue improvements.
These works will also link into completed projects including The Northern Road between Penrith and Narellan.
