For almost five years the Mr Perfect barbecues in Koshigaya Park have helped a lot of local men connect with the outside world.
But when the fifth anniversary rolls around on Sunday, April 20, Mr Perfect will celebrate by offering a special Greek-inspired menu for lunch.
To make the event unforgettable, Mr Perfect has collaborated with local businesses to provide food, drinks, and giveaways for what is anticipated to be a well-attended community celebration.
More than 50 guests are anticipated to attend, with council members, state representatives, and other dignitaries joining the celebrations.
Local man Leigh Ninham has been the host of Mr Perfect’s Campbelltown barbecue since its inception.
“We usually welcome more than 30 men who come along to enjoy a barbecue and have meaningful conversations,” he says.
Mr Perfect fires up the barbie at Koshigaya Park, near the corner of Hurley Street and Camden Road, on the third Sunday of every month.
“Mr Perfect barbecues are a way for men to engage in conversation, and listening, that always helps them,’’ says Mr Ninham.
Since inception, Mr Perfect has operated barbecues at over 80 different locations across Australia, including Campbelltown.
At present there are about 35 regular barbecues operating once a month, with an annual total of about 420 barbecue events.
“Getting outside in the sunshine is healthy – it’s an antidote to isolation, meeting a welcoming bunch of guys in the fresh air,” said John Mooney, CEO of Mr Perfect.
“For many of them Mr Perfect is a chance to feel heard, find connection, and address issues such as mental health and family pressures in a non-judgmental space.
“Our hosts are trained to identify those who may be struggling and can guide them to appropriate crisis support when needed.
“Mr Perfect’s vision is to help get men connected, reduce their loneliness, refer those in crisis to appropriate resources, and support those that are finding life tough,” Mr Mooney said.
“By helping men, we believe we can contribute to reducing suicide, and domestic violence, keeping families together, and men healthier and productive.”
