The official opening of Camden’s multi-million BMX track was on Saturday, but the real celebration took place 24 hours later at the completion of the AusCycling 2022 NSW state championships.
Home team, the Macarthur BMX Pirates, took out the club championship in the competition, which got under way on Friday and was completed on Sunday.
The club’s pirate ship was also on display for the first time in a while, and with club members dressed in costume, Macarthur also received the “best presented’’ award.
“Well done pirates, I am a very proud president,’’ posted on social media the club chief Fred Furner.
He also praised Camden Council for the facility at Kirkham Park.
“It was great to have our mayor, councillors and council staff present at the opening ceremony to officially open the facility,’’ Mr Furner said.
“Thank you to Camden Council for building this world class facility to showcase the exciting sport of BMX.’’
Upgrades to Kirkham Park BMX Facility, which cost $5.56 million in total, have transformed it into an international-level venue.
Speaking at Saturday’s official opening, Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, pictured below, said the facility would be a popular spot for many young and aspiring athletes whilst also attracting riders from all over Australia.
“Council is dedicated to providing its residents with new high-quality facilities, and this facility is definitely one of the jewels in our crown,” Cr Fedeli said.
“It’s been amazing being part of this process because we’ve learnt so much about the sport and the tracks themselves.’’
Casual users can access the pump track which is open for riders of all ability levels.
The pump track provides a circuit that includes rollers, banked turns and jump features to provide riders with a number of riding options through internal loops.
The four different loops for riders to use, include a beginner loop, intermediate/expert loop, expert jump and snake-run loop and the berm corner turns.
