It’s a bit of a cliché, but the truth is most people are curious about what is the secret to a long life.

A news story about someone who has made it to the grand old age of 100, or beyond is not complete without asking the centenarian in question to what they attribute their impressive longevity.

Dorothy Neilson, who will turn 104 later this month, proudly credits her long and happy life to her loving marriage and children.

She describes the day of her marriage as the happiest day of her life.

Dorothy, a resident of Whiddon Easton Park in Glenfield for more than 15 years, will celebrate her special day surrounded by family, staff and fellow residents.

She was born on January 27, and shows no signs of slowing down.

Indeed, some of our sources inside Whiddon have told us Dorothy – pictured above – will often say: “I am hungry for the next day.”

A devoted housewife and mother, Dorothy has two daughters, Kay and Ruth; five grandchildren, Rebecca, Graeme, Ben, Tim, and Julia; and nine great-grandchildren.

At Whiddon, Dorothy enjoys a vibrant social life, playing cards, bingo, and watching TV.

Whiddon is an award winning care provider that has looked after older Australians across regional, rural, and remote NSW – including Glenfield –  and Southeast Queensland for more than 75 years.

But let’s return to the birthday girl: asked about her favourite life chapter, Dorothy fondly recalls caravanning around Australia in her 60s and 70s.

As for what she’s most excited about for her 104th birthday, Dorothy said she simply cherishes the opportunity to get together with family.

Happy birthday, Dorothy Neilson, many happy returns!
