Rectification works now complete, Camden’s Little Sandy Bridge is set to reopen this Friday, December 19.
Little Sandy Bridge was closed in March 2020 due to extensive damage from flood waters.
Later floods in 2022, then again in March and June 2024, resulted in further damage to the eastern or Elderslie side, washing away the bridge approach, pathway and large sections of the riverbank and vegetation.
The rectification project included extensive earthworks and filling of the eroded areas to provide access and enable construction at the eastern side.
The deck on the eastern side of the bridge was extended as part of the repair work.
Erosion protection on both sides of the river but mostly the eastern side was ramped up as part of the work, while the pathway on the eastern side was realigned.
Landscaping of an area of approximately 6000 square metres completed the work and now Little Sandy Bridge can open for “business’’ once again.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said she was thrilled to be announcing its reopening.
“We’ve worked closely and extensively with industry experts to achieve an outcome that will best reduce the impacts of future flooding events,” she said.
“While there’s never any guarantee around flooding events, we’re confident the surveying and modelling works, as well as a peer review of the concept design, has provided the best rectification option available.”
The $3.7 million project rectification project was jointly funded by Camden Council and the Federal and NSW Governments.
