Local library services are set to enter a new era with the relocation of HJ Daley Library to Downtown Plaza, at the former Spotlight store on Queen Street, in the heart of Campbelltown.

The planned relocation will see all existing services and programs housed at the three-level Queen Street site from next year.

However, the new location for the main library in Campbelltown could also have implications for the Queen Street precinct, which is currently in a state of decline.

Mayor George Greiss, pictured above with library staff in the new site, said the new CBD location was an opportunity to enhance existing library services while also taking advantage of a new space to trial ideas and programs that will benefit the community in the future.

“As our city grows, so has the demand for a library that can provide for the increased number of programs and resources required to service the modern Campbelltown community,” Cr Greiss said.

“We anticipate the library will attract 10,000 additional visitors to the city centre each month, creating significant economic uplift for surrounding businesses and building on projects such as On Q and our public art program to help realise the goals of the Reimagining Campbelltown City centre master plan,” he said.

Work will start in the coming weeks to prepare the new site for the relocation, which became necessary because construction will soon begin on the second stage of the GenesisCare healthcare precinct on the existing site of the HJ Daley Library, located in Hurley Street.

Over the coming months local library users will see plenty happening on site as preparations get under way to ensure the new library site opens in 2024 as scheduled.

All current services and programs will remain open at the current HJ Daley Library site until the relocation is complete.
