The new public high school in Leppington is set to be co-located with Leppington Public School. Yesterday, the Minns Labor Government announced the proposed site just as community consultation begins on council plans for Leppington’s new town centre.
Education minister Prue Car, along with local MP Nathan Hagarty, dropped in to Leppington Public School for the announcement (pictured above).
The new high school, a key election commitment of the Minns Government, is proposed to be built on land at Rickard Road to the south of the railway line, flanked by future community greenspace and the Byron Road sports fields.
The new school is part of Labor’s plan to address the lack of schools in Sydney’s growth areas which were neglected by the former Liberal National government.
It means families in Leppington will be able to drop their children to school, from kindergarten to Year 12, on an expanded seven-hectare site.
Planning for the school is well under way. Architects, engineers and town planners are undertaking site assessment to inform the school design and construction of the future school will be master planned to enable it to grow over time to meet the needs of local families in the rapidly growing area.
The Minns Labor Government says it is rebuilding essential services and addressing the school infrastructure backlog in Sydney’s growth areas so that working families in these suburbs neglected by the former Liberal National Government will be able to send their children to high quality local public schools.
The recent record education budget included $3.5 billion for urgently needed new and upgraded schools across Western Sydney.
The new high school at Leppington will come in addition to major upgrades at Leppington Public School next door, plus upgrades in neighbouring suburbs to Austral Public School, Greenway Park Public School and Dalmeny Public School.
New high schools are also being delivered for Edmondson Park and Gledswood Hills/Gregory Hills.
“The growing suburbs of Leppington, Denham Court, and Austral have long been waiting for a public high school for their kids, so the announcement of this local high school site is a significant milestone for my community,’’ says Member for Leppington Nathan Hagarty.
“Co-locating the new high school next door to the public school will create a unique K-12 education precinct, just a short distance from Leppington railway station and in the middle of the planned Leppington Town Centre.
“My community was left in limbo after 12 years of neglect under the former government.
“We’re working to fix that. I am proud to be part of a Labor government with a genuine commitment to quality public education in South Western Sydney.”
Deputy premier and minister for education and early learning Prue Car said Leppington was a key growth area for Sydney.
“It’s crucial that along with new homes, the government provides the necessary local education, transport and healthcare services,’’ she said.
