A dark comedy with unexpected twists and uproarious moments will kick off a season of Italian films at Casula Powerhouse arts centre this Friday night.

Called Put Grandma in the Freezer (pictured), the suspense of the story will keep audiences guessing until the very end.

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is embracing la dolce vita with a series of classic Italian films over four months.

Italian Film Fridays will see an Italian film screened on Fridays starting on August 9 and finishing on November 22.

The series is being held in conjunction with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney.

With a rich heritage spanning decades, Italian cinema is renowned for its compelling storytelling, breathtaking cinematography, and unforgettable performances.

From gripping dramas to hilarious comedies, poignant romances to exhilarating thrillers, this series of films offers something for every cinematic palate.

The five films and dates are:

  • August 9 (launch) Put Grandma in the Freezer
  • August 30 – Mia Madre
  • September 27 – Belli Ciao
  • October 25 – Strangeness
  • November 22 (Closing) – 8½ by Federico Fellini

At the launch of the festival, to get audiences in the mood before the film, there will be a 30-minute live performance, by ARIA award winner Cosima De Vito.

Cosima shot to national prominence when she appeared on the first season of Australian Idol.

Tickets are $10 each which includes a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink.

Bellbird Dining and Bar will be offering a pre-purchased Italian shared platter for $55 per while Mezze Plates will be available for pre-purchase for $18 each.
