In a warning ahead of the King’s Birthday long weekend a local council says fireworks should be left to the professionals.
In a media release issued this morning, Camden Council is reminding residents to “celebrate safely and steer clear of illegal fireworks this June long weekend’’.
Council says illegal fireworks can cause serious injuries, easily start fires, distress pets and wildlife, and disrupt families and communities.
The warning is part of council’s community safety campaign in partnership with Camden Police Area Command, See Something. Say Something, which aims to improve reporting of crimes and anti-social behaviour, as well as improve community safety in local public spaces.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the long weekend was a time to come together and celebrate safely.
“We want everyone to enjoy the long weekend, but illegal fireworks can turn celebrations into something very dangerous,” she said.
“They might seem exciting and like they’re harmless fun, but that is not accurate.
“Not only are they against the law, but they also pose real risks to people, property and our environment. It’s simply not worth it.”
Council says it’s encouraging residents to leave fireworks to the professionals and instead enjoy licensed community displays, which are conducted under strict safety regulations.
To report illegal fireworks, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. In an emergency, always call 000.
