Work has started on a project to build new on and off ramps on the Hume Highway at the Wilton interchange, as well as a three-lane bridge over the motorway to North Wilton.

As part of the project, the existing Niloc Bridge over the Hume Highway will be converted to a dedicated walking and cycling bridge, separating pedestrians and cyclists from vehicular traffic, resulting in improved safety.

The state member for Wollondilly, Judy Hannan, who attended the sod turning ceremony (pictured above) said the work was expected to be complete by the end of next year.

“This significant road infrastructure would provide road, cycling and pedestrian connectivity to the new high school for Wollondilly, new public school and preschool in Wilton,’’ Ms Hannan said.

“Other benefits include faster direct connectivity for Wilton residents to Campbelltown and Sydney CBD.

“Landcom, the developer of the Panorama project in North Wilton, is responsible for fully funding this infrastructure.’’

Seymour Whyte Constructions are the principal contractor on the project.

On completion, maintenance of the bridge and ramps will be the responsibility of Transport for NSW, rather than Wollondilly Shire Council.

When work is complete, vehicles will use the new northbound ramp to enter the Hume Motorway from North Wilton.

Vehicles from the future Wilton Town Centre can also use this ramp to access the motorway.

The ramp will start about 300m south of the existing Niloc Bridge and join the Hume Motorway as a merge lane underneath the bridge.

The new southbound ramp will allow vehicles (travelling from Campbelltown and Sydney, for example) to exit the Hume Motorway and enter directly into Bingara Gorge by turning left or North Wilton by turning right (via a new bridge over the Hume).
