Half of Macarthur region residents seeking health services such as paediatric and maternity must travel outside the region.

The George Centre, a state of the art maternity and paediatric private health facility in Gregory Hills will change all that.

Construction is scheduled to start in September on the $100 million project.

Acurio Health, which is behind The George Centre, says it will open its doors in two years.

The George Centre will be phase one of a three stage integrated health and innovation precinct that will see an investment of more than $500 million as part of a joint venture between Acurio and the ASX-listed Home Consortium’s HealthCo arm.

The George Centre will be the first private paediatric focused healthcare facility in NSW.

Acurio founder and medical director, associate professor Andrew Chang, said there was a strong need for additional healthcare facilities in the area, particularly a dedicated inpatient paediatric service.

“We are building the largest private maternity and paediatric hospital in Sydney to ensure the community has access to exceptional care,” he said.

State Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said almost 20 per cent of babies in our state were born in South Western Sydney.

“Over the next 10 years, the Macarthur region’s population is forecast to grow by 27 per cent, making it almost the size of Canberra,’’ he said.

“I welcome Acurio’s investment to provide additional services to complement the public healthcare services within our community.’’

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said 100 new residents were moving to Camden every week.

“Many of these are young families, and it’s incredibly important that they have high quality services close to home.

“An increase in local medical services and facilities was identified as a priority by local children and families and helped inform Camden’s children and families strategy.

“The George Centre is a step in the right direction for our fantastic area and I look forward to seeing this new medical facility come to fruition,” Cr Fedeli said.

Prof Chang said the hospital would attract specialist doctors, allied health professionals and other clinicians.

“By bringing these services together, The George Centre will reduce the burden of travelling long distances for specialist care,” he said.

The George Centre will offer 78 beds across paediatric, adolescent and maternity wards, day surgery centre, five operating theatres, four delivery suites, two endoscopic suites, critical care unit, in and out-patient radiology and pathology services and pharmacy.
