Anne Stanley, the federal member for Werriwa has extended her condolences to the families and friends of the four aircrew from Holsworthy Barracks lost in last week’s helicopter tragedy.

On Friday, July 28 at about 11pm an Australian Army MRH-90 helicopter taking part in the Talisman Sabre military exercises crashed into the ocean near Hamilton Island.

Tragically, four aircrew were aboard and are now presumed dead.

They were later identified as Captain Danniel Lyon, Corporal Alexander Naggs, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent and Warrant Officer class 2 Joseph Laycock.

All four of the aircrew are from the 6th Aviation Regiment based at the Holsworthy Barracks – an active base in our local community since World War I.

“My thoughts are with them,’’ says Ms Stanley.

“I know many in our community have a personal connection to the Defence Barracks at Holsworthy.

“The aircrew will have family and friends in our community.’’

Defence Minister Richard Marles on Monday confirmed significant wreckage of the MRH-90 Taipan helicopter had been discovered.

“With every passing hour, it is now clear any hope of finding Captain Lyon, Lieutenant Nugent, Corporal Naggs and Warrant Office Laycock alive has been lost,’’ the defence minister told the media.

Mr Marles said there will be a full and thorough investigation into the crash but for now, the government and defence force stands with the families of the men.

Ms Stanley said support is available for anyone needing it:

Serving men and women can contact Open Arms on 1800 011 046.

Families can call Defence Member and Family Support on 1800 624 608.
