The makeover of Old Menangle School is an example of how to preserve heritage – and provide a brilliant new community space.

Following its official opening yesterday, the multi-use space is destined to become a destination park for families to visit, stay and play for the day.

Old Menangle School – which dates back to the 1870s – is also located very near to the train station in Menangle.

The new site includes a playground and nature play areas, a community outdoor kitchen, barbecue and shelter facilities, amenities and of course, the must see upgraded old school building.

“I’m thrilled to open this magnificent space and to see it ready for the community to enjoy,’’ said Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould after the ribbon cutting.

“I know it will be popular with locals and visitors alike.’’

Deputy Mayor Matthew Deeth, Cr Hilton Gibbs, Cr Suzy Brandstater, Cr Michael Banasik, and Cr Blair Briggs, along with CEO Ben Taylor and council staff attended the ribbon cutting.

Funding for the project has been provided by Public Space Legacy Program, NSW Government, Mirvac, Camden AGL Community Legacy Program and Council’s Building Renewal Funds and Contributions.

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said it was wonderful to see Menangle’s history being preserved.

“The community has taken such a creative approach to preserving the old school site, which I understand originally opened its doors back in 1871,” Ms Moriarty said.

“By preserving the building and upgrading the facilities locals will be able to celebrate their rich heritage while enjoying modern comfort and convenience.”
