Crash driver charged after heroin was found in his truck

A disqualified driver has been charged after drugs were seized following a road incident near Campbeltown earlier this week.

About 1.30am on Tuesday (September 26), emergency services were called to the Hume Highway at Menangle, following reports a truck had rolled and one of its spare tyres had crashed into a Volkswagen Golf sedan.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 45-year-old woman, was not injured.

The truck driver, a 42-year-old man, was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard for assessment.

Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

During a search of the truck, investigators allegedly located 2.2kg of heroin, 1,4-Butanediol, and a mobile phone. These were seized to undergo forensic examination.

The 42-year-old man was discharged from hospital yesterday (Wednesday) and was taken Campbelltown Police Station.

He was charged with possessing a prohibited drug, supplying large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, drive a motor vehicle during disqualification period, and supply an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug.

The Canberra man was refused bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court today, while investigations are continuing.

Dangerous drivers have been put on notice: NSW Police say they will be out in force across the state’s road this Labour Day long weekend.

Operation Labour Day 2023 commences at 12.01am tomorrow (Friday) and concludes at 11.59pm on Monday.

Police say it will see officers deployed across the state, targeting speeding, drink driving, fatigue and other driving offences.

Double demerits will also be in place for the duration of the operation.
