The men’s Illawarra District competition was put aside last weekend for the NSW Country Rugby Championships in Tamworth.
It meant that all clubs except the Camden Rams (see details below) had a week off.
But as far as Harlequins fans were concerned, there was still plenty of rugby on offer.
On Saturday, the lady Quins hosted Eastern Suburbs in the Sydney Rugby First Division competition.
From the kick off, a very enthusiastic Easts side pounced on every Harlequins error to shoot out to a 14-0 lead.
However, the Harlequins finally settled down and managed to score some points of their own.
The half time score was 14-14, and it was anyone’s game in the last stanza.
Indeed, it was the Quins who came out firing, especially in the engine room, dominating the forward battles.
Quins scored almost immediately after the resumption, to grab a 19-14 lead.
After applying more pressure on Easts, Harlequins extended their lead to 26-14.
Easts scored on the bell for a full time scoreline of 26-19, which flattered the visitors.
More importantly, this young Harlequins women’s side is improving every week, and has the potential to go deep into the competition.
They are home again this Friday night when they host Sydney University from 7pm.
In other results from the weekend, the Harlequins under 18 boys had a great win over Randwick, 38-10, while the under 16s scored a last minute 24-20 win over Camden.
Speaking of Camden, their men’s games against Shamrocks were allowed to go ahead.
Camden had already put plans in place to celebrate their 50th anniversary on the weekend before NSW Country changed the date of the Country Championships.
Camden successfully requested that they play Shamrocks due to the long history between the two clubs.
In first grade, Camden defeated Shamrocks 50-17, and also won in second grade, 24-12. In third grade, Camden defeated Blue Mountains 26-5.
