Two South West Sydney Academy of Sport golf squad members will be taking part in the North v South Cup in Batemans Bay later this month.

Libby Newcombe and Zackie Kadir have been invited to represent their academy after their excellent performances at this year’s NSW regional academy games in Wagga Wagga and Tumut.

The pair play off handicaps of 12 and 1 respectively.

“The annual North v South Cup will have the state’s top junior golfers in action,’’ says Stephen Craig, the sport operations manager at the South West Sydney academy (SWSAS).

“The athlete’s selection recognises not just their achievements at the regional academy games, but their ongoing commitment in developing themselves and their game as a part of SWSAS ,’’ he said.

A team of six young golfers represented SWSAS at the regional academy games late last month.

They were among almost 80 competitors from the 12 regional academy programs across the state.

Under the tutelage of golf coordinator Scott Martyn, SWSAS recorded pleasing results in the individual event, which was played over 36 holes.

The squad then headed to the high country and Tumut golf course for the teams’ competition.

Teams were ranked according to their athletes’ individual rounds from Saturday, with SWSAS placed in division two.

SWSAS proceeded to defeat the Hunter academy team to qualify for the final against North Coast, where it claimed victory.

Representatives from the academy’s golf program will participate in local community golf days throughout May and June.

A big focus on this year’s remaining program will be taking part in the JNJG Junior tour, concluding with the Macarthur Junior Masters in Campbelltown and Camden next month.
