A new kayak launch facility has been opened at Light Horse Park, providing easy access to the upper Georges River

Supported by the NSW Government and delivered by Liverpool City Council, the accessible facility is the first of its kind in Greater Sydney.

The new dock sets a groundbreaking standard for accessibility on the water.

It gives water enthusiasts, including people with disabilities, a new gateway to a previously difficult to reach part of the river.

This facility is just phase one of the redevelopment of Light Horse Park, which will transform the area into a vibrant, inclusive and modern community space.

The NSW Government has invested $900,000 in the upgrade as part of a Western Sydney Infrastructure Grant, with an additional $163,870 from Transport for NSW Maritime.

Charishma Kaliyanda, Member for Liverpool, attended the official opening of the dock facility last week.

“As a community, we’re so lucky to have this wonderful waterway on our doorstep, and it should be accessible for everyone to enjoy,’’ MS Kaliyanda said.

“This new launch facility is a game changer for our community, allowing paddlers of all abilities to enjoy a day out on the beautiful Upper Georges River.

“Liverpool is a thriving part of our city and this launch platform will not only help support its growing popularity, but provide a space that will be loved by future generations.”

Liesl Tesch, the parliamentary secretary for disability inclusion, attended the official opening, as well as getting into a kayak with Ms Kaliyanda afterwards, pictured above, right.

“Accessing our beautiful waterways should not be a luxury for people with disability and access needs and it is fantastic to see that every person can now get out on the stunning upper Georges River,’’ Ms Tesch said.
