Local MP Dr Mike Freelander has announced that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will deliver an International Mother Language monument in Macarthur to recognise the multicultural community in South West Sydney.

This $50,000 election commitment will help fund the monument at Minto in partnership with Campbelltown City Council to honour and celebrate linguistic diversity.

The monument will stand as a tribute to International Mother Language Day.

Macarthur has a rapidly growing multicultural community, and this election commitment will contribute to providing a space for them to celebrate their cultures and traditions with the wider community.

The monument will recognise and promote the right of all people to speak, preserve, and celebrate their native languages.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

“I’m proud to represent Macarthur as the Federal Member, as our region is diverse, and this commitment reflects our commitment to recognise this,’’ says Dr Freelander.

“It reflects the appreciation that the Albanese Labor Government has for multiculturalism in South West Sydney.

“This is an important announcement for many cultural groups in Macarthur and I am pleased to work with Campbelltown Council to make this long-time dream a reality,” Dr Freelander said.

Mayor of Campbelltown Darcy Lound said there were more than 79 different languages spoken in homes across the Campbelltown local government area.

“This Mother Language Monument here in Minto will recognise this and serve as an important tribute to our diverse community,’’ he said.

“As Mayor, I’m proud to work with Dr Freelander and the Federal Labor Government to deliver this important monument for our diverse community.”

  2. I can’t see the value of the monument. What is the problem that has to be celebrated? To my knowledge, nobody, governments or otherwise, have ever stopped or tried to stop migrants from speaking their own languages, mostly at home or within their own communities. The language of this country is English and migrants should be expected to speak and/or understand that – it used to be a requisite of entry into this country for migrants, especially for people seeking work or education. What a waste of $50,000 that could be better spent within Macarthur for other more important reasons and of more relevance to the whole community.
