Free bus service to beach returns next January

Summer officially starts tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1. But it doesn’t really start until those hot, humid days come along.

When they do, Macarthur residents head to the beaches in the Illawarra.

In Wollondilly, there’s even better news with confirmation the free summer beach bus service will be available once again.

The popular hop on, hop off bus service will be available during January 2022, its ninth year of operation off the back of a partnership between Wollondilly Shire Council, Picton Buslines and SIMEC Mining.

During the hottest part of summer, the Beach Bus offers Wollondilly residents free travel to North Wollongong Beach (pictured above) from various stops across the Shire.

The Beach Bus will be running throughout January 2022 each Thursday: 6 January, 13 January, 20 January and 27 January.

The Beach Bus is for residents of all ages and will stop at 12 locations across the Shire.

To enable more residents to join the bus while reducing travel time for everyone, two buses will travel on two separate routes; one leaving from Bargo and one from Warragamba.

Appin residents won’t miss out – they can access free preloaded Opal cards from the Appin Pharmacy to catch the regular bus to Wollongong.

Upon arrival at the coast, Wollongong City Council Lifeguards will jump on board the buses to update beachgoers on current surf conditions and beach safety.

However this is an unsupervised bus service and there will be no adult supervision on the bus or at the beach. And no responsibility will be taken for people who miss their scheduled departure time.
