Wests Tigers have landed another big fish for the 2023 season – Charlie Staines.
Yes, that Charlie Staines, the winger who made an unforgettable debut in 2020 when he scored four tries for Penrith against St George Illawarra and was mobbed by his mates, who were watching from the sidelines.
Staines became somewhat of a rugby league cult figure going by the nickname Forbes Ferrari, in a nod to his speed and the place where he grew up.
He scored 23 tries from 38 appearances across three seasons, including a try in the Panthers’ recent grand final win over the Eels.
Staines becomes the third big signing for Wests Tigers, who will also be welcoming NSW Origin hooker hooker Apisai Koroisau and gun second rower Isaiah Papalii.
Staines, 22, will link up with the Wests Tigers early next month.
Staines says he’s looking forward to a new start under coach Tim Sheens.
“I’m sure Wests Tigers will make strong progress in 2023,” he said.
“The club has a new coaching staff, incredible facilities, some great new signings, and a strong junior nursery, so I’m really excited to be a part of this club.”
Incoming head coach Sheens says Staines is a player he looks forward to working with.
“Charlie has shown what he is capable of,” said Sheens.
“Like most of our squad, he’s young and still learning.
“I’m confident Charlie will continue his development at our club and it’s great to have him on board.”
Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe says Staines was a welcome addition to the club.
“We are delighted to have Charlie join the Wests Tigers.
“He’s a proven speedster, a premiership-winner, and a player with immense talent.’’
