David Moncrieff, the federal member for Hughes, says he is proud that more than 1000 people in his electorate have bought their first home through the Federal Government’s 5 per cent deposit scheme.
A big percentage of that was in the Campbelltown parts of his electorate. The top three localities of the take up of the 5 percent deposit scheme were:
- 2565 (Ingleburn, Bardia and Macquarie Links): 435 individuals
- 2564 (Macquarie Fields and Long Point): 203 individuals
- 2167 (Glenfield): 170 individuals
“Five per cent deposits have proven popular and successful right across southern Sydney, and are helping more young people live, work, and raise a family in the community they know and love,” says Mr Moncrieff, who was first elected in the Labor landslide of 2025.
“Young families have had a raw deal in the housing market for far too long,’’ he says.
“Our government is backing young Australians by building more homes, making it better to rent, and supporting first home buyers.”
Under the scheme, all first home buyers can access 5 per cent deposits, allowing them to purchase with a lower deposit and without paying Lenders Mortgage Insurance.
The Albanese Government expanded the 5 per cent deposit scheme to all first home buyers in October 2025.
One year on, half of all first home buyers are now using the scheme to access their own home, with more than 280,000 Australians supported through the scheme so far.
For the median home purchased under the 5 per cent deposit scheme, first home buyers now save more than $15,000 in Lenders Mortgage Insurance, while getting into home ownership years earlier.
“We have now seen 1,067 locals buy their first home years earlier than they otherwise could, building better lives and taking a real ownership stake in their communities,” Mr Moncrieff said.
