It’s the write stuff for inaugural Fisher’s Ghost competition

The creative talents of local writers were celebrated when the inaugural winners of the Fisher’s Ghost Writing Prize were announced last week.

The competition drew more than 100 entrants who were asked to produce a short story, essay, memoir or poetry piece responding to the theme, Hiding in Plain Sight.

Winners included:

  • Adult short story/essay/memoir: Blake Curran, The Infinite Sky
  • Adult poetry: Marguerite Pulham, Palimpsest. The author is pictured with council’s community learning and and libraries manager Paula Pfoeffer;
  • Grade 10-12 short story/essay/memoir: Tia Purohit, A Veiled Throne
  • Grade 10-12 poetry: Tara Lau, I Am But Myself
  • Grade 7- 9 short story/essay/memoir: Laeisa Kumar, The Lead Detective
  • Grade 7- 9  poetry: Maryam Muzammil, The Rose and the Thorne
  • Grade 4-6 short story/essay/memoir: Brendan Dias, The Toad Tale
  • Grade 4-6 poetry: Furgan Rahman, In Plain Sight.

The Fisher’s Ghost Writing Prize was managed and judged by WestWords and Campbelltown Library.

A publication featuring the winners and highly commended entries will be available on Council’s website.

In other news, the achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the region were recognised in the 2021 Macarthur NAIDOC awards.

NAIDOC celebrations were put on hold this year and the winners were announced at an online ceremony last week. They were:

• Outstanding Service to the Community (organisation)  South Western Sydney Local Health District Aboriginal Health Unit;

• Outstanding Service to the Community (group)  Picton High School ATSI Dance Group;

• Outstanding Service to the Community (worker/individual)  Mandy Edwards;

• Outstanding Service to the Community (Elder)  Edward Burge;

• Outstanding Service to the Community (Volunteer)  Edward Burge

• Outstanding Commitment to Reconciliation (organisation) Officeworks Campbelltown;

• Outstanding Personal Commitment to Reconciliation – Alanah Scholes, pictured.
