In a move which will improve pedestrian safety, the school zone along Deans Road, Airds near John Warby Public School will be extended.

Works were scheduled to start last weekend.

The improvements come after local representations from the school community pointing out the need for safety measures along Deans Road for both students and motorists.

Deans Road not only services John Warby Public School, but is also an important connector between Georges River Road and Riverside Drive, which leads to the local retail precinct and high school.

Existing school zone signs and road markings on Deans Road at Airds will be placed about 80 metres north of the current location effectively extending the school zone.

The extended 40km/h school zone was scheduled to come into effect some time today (September 11), weather permitting.

It will operate between 8am and 9.30am, and between 2.30pm and 4pm on normal school days, the usual school zone hours.

While work to extend the zone is being undertaken, road crews will not be active in peak school drop and pick up times. Drivers are requested to follow signage while works are being undertaken.

“It was raised with me that there were safety concerns for pedestrians around Deans Road and ultimately, the safety of our children and our pedestrians is the number one priority,’’ says Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren.

“I am thrilled to see that these works are being given the attention that they need and deserve.

“I congratulate the school community for identifying the need to improve safety along Deans Road and am pleased we have been able to find a solution.

“I urge both motorists and pedestrians to take care when travelling through the school zone.”
