
A pilot died when one of two light planes involved in a midair collision crashed near the Wedderburn airfield.
Authorities say the two planes were taking part in a formation flight with two other light planes.
They had taken off from Napperfield Airfield in Wedderburn, which is home to the NSW Sport Aircraft Club.
The second plane landed safely at the airfield.
Local police say that around noon yesterday, (Sunday, November 30) emergency services responded to reports of a plane crash in the vicinity of the Wedderburn airfield, which is located near the township of Appin.
Police were told two light planes had collided mid-air, before one of the planes crashed nearby in bushland.
Responding emergency services located the body of the pilot, believed to be the sole occupant of the aircraft. It was later confirmed he was a 64 year old man
Police confirmed that the other plane landed safely at the airfield, and the pilot was uninjured.
Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command who attended secured the two crime scenes on the site.
Members of the public were urged to avoid the area.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) issued a statement in the afternoon confirming it would be investigating the cause of the crash.
Several ATSN investigators were due to examine the site at some stage yesterday.
