This causeway on Anthony Road at Catherine Field, which was built more than 50 years ago, is subject to regular flooding.

Over the years it has wreaked havoc on residents, including trapping some of them in their homes.

It has been the cause of a fatality on at least one occasion.

Residents have raised the issue with Camden Council numerous times.

But now it is about to be finally made safer for the community.

Camden Council has secured funding through the Federal disaster recovery funding arrangements to initiate the design and implementation of flood safety enhancements for the causeway.

Improvements will include enhanced lighting, a flood sensor system and signage upgrades.

Member for Leppington, Nathan Hagarty, said he first called on the council to fix the causeway in March.

He welcomed the planned safety upgrade.

“This is a great win for the people of Catherine Field, and all those who use our local roads.

“With the rapid growth and development of our area, a half century-old causeway is no longer safe or appropriate.

“For too long, Anthony Road has been a danger for residents during heavy storms, which are more frequent than ever. It’s time to put the safety of the community first.

“I thank community members for alerting me to this issue. Keeping our community safe and ensuring their well-being will always be a top priority for me,” he said.
