The quickest way to get things back to normal is to vaccinate against Covid-19, according to two South Western Sydney doctors.
Dr Dong Hua, from Campbelltown (pictured at right) and Fairfield GP respiratory clinics and Dr Indran Rajendra from The Practice at Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands say vaccines are safe and effective, and will help protect our community from further outbreaks.
The AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines are highly effective at reducing death and hospitalisation from Covid-19, and would be a major step in returning to life without restrictions, say the two GPs.
“People should get the Covid vaccine because it is Australia’s best chance of reaching herd immunity,” Dr Hua said.
“It protects the individual from the severe effects of Covid-19 and hospitalisation. That way our borders can open and we’ll be able to lead our lives without the risk of further lockdowns.”
The entire state of Victoria is currently in a seven day lockdown which looks set to be extended.
Covid-19 vaccinations are available free to all Australians over 50, people under 50 in vulnerable groups and frontline workers, at NSW Health vaccination hubs, some general practices and GP respiratory clinics across the state.
NSW Health is also taking bookings for people aged 40 to 49 at its 25 Pfizer sites across the state, including its Liverpool hub.
Keith McDonald, the chief executive officer of South Western Sydney Primary Health Network, says vaccination is vital in protecting our community’s lives and livelihoods.
“Australians have listened to the experts by wearing masks, practising social distancing and keeping Covid testing rates high,” he said.
“We can be proud of our response to the pandemic.
“Now is not the time to become complacent. We need as many people as possible to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, to protect our health and the health of our loved ones, and to return to our normal lives.”
