The 2022 Winter Appeal is giving local residents the chance to help those less fortunate than themselves get through the cold months ahead.

An initiative between Wests Group Macarthur and Big Yellow Umbrella, the appeal is seeking donations of new or handmade items such as scarves, beanies, blankets, sleeping bags, backpacks, reusable water bottles, towels, face washers, toiletries and/or Kmart vouchers.

Donations can be dropped off at Wests League Club Leumeah (pictured above) and Big Yellow Umbrella head office in Narellan before July 5.

The campaign has been designed to support the Macarthur Homelessness Steering Committee, the representative body of a network of organisations in the region providing support, counselling, food, clothing and accommodation for those doing it tough.

“In the past 18 months, we have seen an enormous increase in the prevalence of couch surfing, homelessness, mortgage and financial stress in the region,’’ says Kim Landouw from Big Yellow Umbrella.

“Every donation to the Winter Appeal goes a long way toward assisting those people facing homelessness over the colder months.’’

Wests Group chairman Alan Buxton said the appeal was a practical way to support the growing number of hidden homeless in Macarthur.

“With our venues acting as a drop off point for donations we are pleased to be able to play a small role in helping these individuals and families feel warm, safe and supported this winter,’’ he said.

As an extension to the winter appeal, Wests community team will also be hosting a special event called “Love Squared” at West League Club Leumeah on Wednesday, July 20.

Love Squared is a knitting and crochet event for members, guests, and local knitting groups.

They will be crafting beanies, scarfs and 25.4cm squares for blankets and other handmade items to add to the winter appeal.
