Raid on Austral property nets cannabis worth $10.5m

Four men were charged and almost $10.5 million worth of cannabis was seized yesterday in a 10 acre property south west of Liverpool.

Strike Force Hyperion detectives, the Bass Hill Region Enforcement Squad, PolAir and the Dog Unit took part when a crime scene warrant was executed at the Kelly Street property at 10.30am yesterday.

Officers located and seized more than 3,490 cannabis plants, with an estimated potential street value of nearly $10.5 million.

Police also seized documentation and equipment consistent with the cultivation of cannabis.

Upon entry, four men – aged 45, 29 and two aged 27 – attempted to run from police before being arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

The men were all charged with cultivating a large commercial quantity of a prohibited plant and participating in criminal group activity.

Police will allege in court that the men were involved in the large scale cultivation of cannabis.

All four were refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today.

Strike Force Hyperion, which is investigating the cultivation and supply of cannabis across NSW, recently turned its attention to outer South West Sydney.

Their inquiries uncovered a semi-rural 10-acre property in Austral being used for the commercial cultivation and supply of cannabis.

Investigations under are continuing and further arrests are expected.

In a separate incident, a Gregory Hills man will appear in court today charged with commercial drug supply after detectives seized 65kg of cannabis allegedly hidden inside arcade machines.

Last year, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Shaughnessy to investigate the activities of a criminal syndicate operating across Sydney.

During the investigation, police received information relating to the commercial supply of prohibited drugs.

Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives, with assistance from the Tactical Operations Unit arrested a man following a vehicle stop at the intersection of Camden Valley Way and York Street, Casula, about 2.30pm yesterday.

In a subsequent search of the Pantech truck, officers located about 65kg of cannabis hidden inside four arcade machines.

Shortly after the arrest, officers executed three search warrants at homes in Harrington Park, Edmondson Park and Glenfield.

During the searches, police seized $25,000 cash, an air rifle, a taser, a Rolex watch, electronic storage devices and mobile phones.

Police also seized three vehicles including a 2015 AMG Mercedes Benz, 900g of cannabis and 200g of cocaine.

The 39-year-old man was taken to Liverpool Hospital before being taken to Liverpool Police Station, where he was charged with suppling a prohibited drug and knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

The man was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today.
