Campbelltown MP Greg Warren says it would be “an absolute atrocity’’ if Campbelltown Sports Stadium was shunned as part of the government’s new and upgraded suburban stadiums plan.
NSW deputy premier John Barilaro has confirmed today that the Berejiklian Government was supportive of the National Rugby League’s plan to invest in suburban grounds – a concept Mr Warren has long advocated for.
Venues in Brookvale, Penrith and Kogarah have all been earmarked while the possibility of a stadium at Liverpool has also been mooted.
Mr Warren said Campbelltown had to be on the list of venues that would benefit from any plan.
“The Macarthur region is the fastest growing region in NSW and it would be a crying shame if the government shunned it in favour of venues in other locations,” he said.
“Campbelltown has the population, the infrastructure, convenient access to public transport and importantly, the fan base.
“The A-League’s newest team, Macarthur Bulls FC, will call Campbelltown home from next season so it makes sense to invest in an upgrade of Campbelltown Sports Stadium rather than starting from scratch elsewhere.
“There was a time not too long ago when the Western Suburbans Magpies played a dozen games each year at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
“Wests Tigers now only play a few games each year so it would be fantastic for our region to see that presence significantly increased.
“Campbelltown and Leichhardt are the real homes of the Wests Tigers – not Homebush or Parramatta.
“It’s also important to note this government talks a lot but doesn’t often walk the walk.
“That’s why I remain sceptical of this government’s ability and desire to actually deliver on this suburban grounds plan.”
