Planned improvements to the walking trails in John Oxley Reserve, Kirkham will aim to provide greater access to the picturesque views of the Camden valley and the Great Dividing Range.

Camden Council has developed a draft concept plan for the future of the site, which is now publicly available for comment.

The $360,000 project was identified in the Camden Green and Blue Grid Vision and is funded through the NSW Government’s Places to Roam program.

It aims to improve community wellbeing and connect people to the landscape.

The proposed trail leads to a number of vantage points with a view of the Camden area and beyond.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Ashleigh Cagney said she was eager to see what the community thought of the plan.

“This is a very exciting draft concept plan and I encourage everyone to check it out and share their thoughts,” she said.

“It will provide a great opportunity for people to enjoy some fresh air while getting some great views of the beautiful landscape around us.”

For those looking for further information, Camden Council will host a drop-in session today (Thursday,  August 24, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm near the entrance to John Oxley Reserve on The Lanes in Kirkham.

Construction on the project is expected to start in January 2024.

In other Camden news, council has laid out a plan to make the area greener by more than doubling tree coverage.

Council’s draft Urban Forest Strategy 2023, which is on public exhibition, sets an ambitious target to increase the Camden area’s tree canopy from 15 per cent to 40 per cent by 2036.

In order to achieve that target, the Strategy includes an action plan for the increase of the canopy, the management of the urban forest and engagement with the community and stakeholders.

Earlier this year, council conducted a community survey on urban forest which found that 86 per cent of the community strongly agreed there should be more urban forest.

  1. Camden moves ahead, whilst Campbelltown seems to stand still. The Scenic Hills would be an ideal site for some walking tracks..think of the views. I have previously sent a message to Campbelltown Council on this subject but have only received a cursory response to date.
