Wollondilly Shire Council is working with government and community organisations to provide support to the local community and youth, following the tragic accident at Buxton on September 6 when five young people lost their lives.

A series of free school holiday programs with a sport, music and craft focus has been developed for children and young people aged 5 to 24 years. Youth workers will be at most of the events for a chat.

To bring the events to the community, council has joined with South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), the Department of Education, Primary Health Network, Community Links Wellbeing, Headspace, Red Cross, and a range of local businesses and community services.

The programs started last Sunday and will continue until Sunday, October 8.

Specialist support services will be in attendance at each activity to provide information, referrals and resources to young people.

“It has been an extremely difficult time for the Wollondilly community, and in particular our young people,’’ says Mayor Matt Gould.

“It will take some time for everyone to come to terms with the loss of these five precious young lives.

“To help address the trauma experienced in recent weeks, we are offering a range of activities.

“Each event is aimed at providing social connection, recreational opportunities, and professional support for our local youth and their families.

“Thank you to minister for youth Ben Franklin and the office for regional youth for their financial contribution to the program.”

Parental supervision at activities will be required for all children under 12 years of age.
