It’s barely more than a kilometre from the current location of Campbelltown city library in Hurley Street to its new location in Downtown Plaza in the main street.

But with thousands of items having to be moved from one to the other there will be some pain for regular library users.

Library furniture and shelving not being relocated will be donated to local schools.

This morning Campbelltown Council has finally revealed the date of the opening of the new premises of what is also known as the HJ Daley Library.

Council says that from Monday, August 4, library services will be available in the heart of Campbelltown’s city centre, Queen Street.

The current site on Hurley Street will close from Thursday, July 10, to enable the transfer of the library collection, shelving, furniture and other equipment as the final touches are being put on the new premises.

Mayor of Campbelltown Darcy Lound said the final stage of the relocation would take place following the completion of works at the end of this month.

“This is an exciting time as we prepare to welcome the library back to the main street of Campbelltown,” Cr Lound said.

“The current site in Hurley Street holds many happy memories from the past 30 years.

“We are now looking ahead to a new chapter that will ensure people can access a centrally located library while continuing to enjoying the many great services and programs that have long been valued by the community,” he said.

“While there will be a short disruption to our services during the move, library users can still access programs and services at our other library branches across Campbelltown.

“We are look forward to welcoming the community to discover this great new location when we open the doors in August.”

The new location will offer increased space for the collection, improved accessibility due to the city centre location and creates opportunities to trial new services and programs.

The relocation is expected to bring 10,000 people into the city centre each month, generating significant economic uplift for surrounding businesses.

  1. Where will people park? I know the extra 10,000 users won’t all drive, but many will, and parking is already difficult.
