Pursuit driver charged with assaulting police officers

A man was due to face court today following two pursuits in Campbelltown overnight in which he allegedly smashed into three police vehicles and assaulted officers trying to arrest him.

About 1.10am this morning, officers attached to Campbelltown City Police Area Command were on patrol duty when they attempted to stop a Subaru SUV on Waminda Avenue, East Campbelltown.

When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle continued towards St Johns Road, Bradbury, and travelled along Briar Road before police terminated the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle on Riverside Drive, Airds.

The vehicle was next sighted the vehicle stopped on Kialba Road, Campbelltown.

The vehicle travelled along Rose Street before police attempted to stop it on Blaxland Road.

When the driver of the vehicle failed to stop a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued south along Campbelltown Road turning onto Rudd Road, Leumeah before continuing south along O’Sullivan Road and allegedly crashing into a traffic island at the intersection of Kingsclare Street, Leumeah.

Police will allege the driver rammed a police car before continuing and crashing into another two police cars.

The driver – a 42-year-old man – was uninjured.

As police were attempting to arrest the man, he allegedly assaulted three police officers who were uninjured.

He was taken to Campbelltown Police Station and charged with two counts of reckless driving, three counts of assaulting police, four counts of resisting arrest, and a number of driving and traffic offences.

He was refused bail to appear before Campbelltown Local Court.
