Federal MP Anne Stanley has jumped aboard the campaign for an Indigenous name to the future city around the new airport at Badgerys Creek.

The member for Werriwa is calling on locals to get behind the push for an Indigenous name instead of Bradfield, the preferred option of the state government.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced in March that the new airport city would be named in honour of Sydney Harbour Bridge designer and engineer Sir John Bradfield.

The proposed name has been placed on exhibition for public comment by the Geographic Names Board, with submissions closing on Saturday, September 4.

“I respect the work of Sir John Bradfield and the prestigious additions he has made to our great city. However, Sir Bradfield has received many tributes for his work including a school, a highway and a federal electorate,” Ms Stanley said.

Ms Stanley is one of several local MPs and councillors who support the idea of an Indigenous name for the airport city of the future.

“The new city will sit on Dharug land and, I encourage a review of the naming of the city and strongly recommend an indigenous individual or a significant indigenous term to replace Bradfield,’’ says Ms Stanley.

“Giving Sydney’s third city an indigenous name is a terrific opportunity to commit and move forward on reconciliation.

“This will eventually grow into Sydney’s third city and a gateway to Australia for visitors coming from all around the world. What better way to welcome those visitors than with a uniquely Australian indigenous name.

“I also encourage everyone to make a submission to the proposal of the name Bradfield on the NSW Government website,” Ms Stanley said.
