Haniya Syed, a high school student from Oran Park, has been awarded the NSW advocate for children and young people [The One to Watch] award.

The honour is part of the 2023 NSW women of the year awards as part of the International Women’s Day (March 8) celebrations.

Haniya, pictured above with other award winners in Sydney, is an emerging artist and technology enthusiast. She attends Unity Grammar, Austral.

She has been recognised for her participation in multiple national and international robotics championship competitions over the past two years.

Her involvement culminated in a silver medal with Team Australia at the first global robotics challenge in Switzerland last year.

The NSW minister for women Bronnie Taylor congratulated Ms Syed and said it was important to recognise rising young stars like her – particularly in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

“I’m delighted to announce this award has been presented to a young person who demonstrates such remarkable courage, talent and hard work, and represents the bright future and potential of all young women throughout NSW,” Mrs Taylor said.

The advocate for children and young people [The One to Watch] award recognises girls and young women aged seven to 17 who demonstrate a single act or ongoing acts of courage, strength, determination and/or kindness to help and support those around them.

Inspirational women run in the Syed family with big sister Daniya a 2021 finalist of this award and a 2023 finalist of the NSW young woman of the year award.

The 2023 NSW women of the year awards ceremony is on today at the International Convention Centre as part of 2023 NSW Women’s Week.

There are seven award categories in the 2023 program, including the Premier’s Award for NSW woman of the year, which is selected from the pool of category winners.

NSW Women’s Week runs from Monday, March 6 to Sunday, March 12.

  1. Wonderful article, only problem is that she goes to Unity Grammar, a school in Austral, not Oran park high. She lives in oran park so that may be where the confusion has come from 😊
