More to come: Camden MP Chris Patterson, Campbelltown Hospital general manager Alison Derrett and Health Minister Jillian Skinner earlier today.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner has officially opened Campbelltown Hospital’s new Acute Services Building – the centrepiece of the $134 million Stage 1 development.

Mrs Skinner toured the state-of-the-art building with Member for Camden Chris Patterson and met patients and staff before sharing a light lunch with community members.

The five-storey Acute Services Building includes: 90 new inpatient beds (with additional capacity for a further 30 beds), an expansion of the pathology laboratory and a co-located and expanded ambulatory care and outpatient floor. The redevelopment has also delivered 18 new emergency places and three new birthing suites.

“This wonderful hospital redevelopment was the first to be promised, delivered and opened to patients under the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government,” Mrs Skinner said.

The NSW Government has reserved $300 million from the Rebuilding NSW Hospitals Fund for Stage 2 of Campbelltown Hospital’s redevelopment – which will include a new emergency department, more operating theatres and expanded intensive care – as well as enhanced paediatric services.

It has also committed $9 million towards construction of a Clinical School on the campus.

Mrs Skinner today viewed plans and artist’s impressions of the Clinical School, a joint project between the NSW Government and the University of Western Sydney.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“This Clinical School will provide for a dedicated teaching and research facility which will benefit the hospital, university and students, as well as the people of Macarthur, who will be cared for by generations of doctors trained right here at Campbelltown Hospital,” she said.[/social_quote]

When complete the Clinical School will include: a clinical skills laboratory, simulation laboratory, 16 clinic rooms, 10 shared rooms for research and academic appointments, a hospital library and a new Centre for Education and Workforce Development, as well as office space.

Mr Patterson said: “After years of neglect by Labor, the news just keeps getting better for Campbelltown Hospital under our Government – we’ve opened Stage 1, we’re planning Stage 2, we will deliver paediatric services to serve south-western Sydney and we’ve helped kickstart a new Clinical School. Wow.”

Member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell welcomed the opening, saying: “This wonderful, state-of-the-art building is what the patients and staff deserve and I am proud to be a member of a government that promised this redevelopment and has delivered.”
