It hasn’t taken long for the people who think they run Sydney to start undermining the biggest thing that’s ever happened in Greater Western Sydney.
Western Sydney International (WSI) airport opens for passenger flights on Sunday for domestic and international on Monday.
But Eastern Sydney – let’s call them what they really are, the establishment, the status quo – are finally showing their true colours.
Trembling at the prospect of us having another reason to not have to travel to their privileged part of Sydney, they are starting to question the wisdom of spending billions of dollars on an international airport so far from where they live.
Here’s their local rag, the Sydney Boring Herald, with this headline this morning over a story about WSI:
“The question is whether it will flourish or become a white elephant.’’
What a total disgrace, yet proof that Sydney is a city of two halves: those who have it all, and those of us who would like a bit of that.
Well, governments have seen the unfairness and are slowly coming to the table.
But the burghers of Point Piper and St Ives don’t like what they see as a loss of relevance, of no longer being at the centre of the universe.
Hell, of being masters of the universe.
It’s the reason they squealed like stuck pigs when it was proposed the Powerhouse Museum be relocated to Western Sydney. They won that battle and it cost the taxpayers of NSW billions to have to build a brand new one out this way.
Oh, and how they hate the work from home concept, because the big smoke, the big end of town is a ghost town with all the westies staying at home, shopping locally, going to the movies and restaurants locally.
It must really irk them to read stories about beaches in Penrith and Campbelltown and billion dollar hospitals in Liverpool and Bankstown.
Well, get used to it because from Monday we will be driving along the Northern Road to WSI to go on our domestic and overseas holidays.
And there’s nothing you can do about it.
