Last year it was Campbelltown city library that was on the move to new premises in the main street.
Now it’s the turn of the Campbelltown Arts Centre, which will start operating out of the main street, as well, from April next year.
The move is necessary to allow a massive, $85 million redevelopment of the arts centre. It is funded by the NSW Government ($79m), and Campbelltown City Council ($5.6m).
Campbelltown Arts Centre is already one of the leading cultural hubs in Greater Western Sydney.
The redevelopment will elevate it to one of the great arts centres of the state and Australia.
The new arts hub will offer a striking new theatre space, vibrant new gallery spaces, versatile function facilities, additional workshop spaces, artist studios, a larger café and the reorientation of the entry to Art Gallery Road – where it used to be.
Completion is scheduled for 2029 at this stage.
The temporary site will enable Campbelltown Arts Centre to continue delivering a vibrant program of
Exhibitions, workshops and events both onsite the temporary arts centre and across the Campbelltown LGA will continue to be delivered during the construction period.
Its new location from April will be the ground floor of the Campbelltown Library.
Supported by a network of satellite venues, including Campbelltown Council’s community centres, the arts centre will work with artists, local groups and organisations to bring arts and cultural experiences directly to communities across the region.
“The temporary relocation of Campbelltown Arts Centre represents an important milestone in the delivery of one of the most significant cultural investments in our city’s history,” says Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Darcy Lound.
“This redevelopment will create a world-class cultural destination that will inspire creativity, attract visitors, support artists and provide greater opportunities for our community to engage with arts and culture for generations to come.
“The temporary site will ensure our programs continue, allowing us to keep delivering the arts and cultural experiences that are such an important part of our community while construction is underway.
“We’re excited to see this transformational project progress and look forward to welcoming the community back to a larger, more accessible and contemporary Campbelltown Arts Centre when redevelopment is completed in 2029,” he said.
