Wollondilly Shire’s towns and villages will go pink next year for a good cause. Indeed Wollondilly Shire Council went pink (pictured above) at the recent meeting where it resolved to support a Shire-wide Pink Up your Town campaign in 2027 to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
Recognising the importance of raising awareness of breast cancer, Council voted to support a range of initiatives that would encourage community education, connection and fundraising for research and support services.
Inspired by the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Go Pink campaign, Council plans to work collaboratively with the Wollondilly Health and Planning Alliance to encourage local businesses and community groups to participate in the campaign through a variety of activities that will bring attention to the cause.
“I thank Councillor Hilton Gibbs for bringing this important motion to Council,” Mayor Matt Gould said.
“We’ll be encouraging local business, sporting clubs, community groups and residents to get involved with our ‘Pink Up your Town’ campaign by decorating shopfronts, community spaces and landmarks in pink, holding fundraising events and helping raise awareness of breast cancer.
“Sadly, cancer has touched just about every family in the Wollondilly Shire in some way, and most of us know someone who has faced that battle,’’ he said.
“By visibly ‘pinking up’ our town centres and villages, the initiative will create a strong sense of community participation while promoting key messages about breast cancer awareness, screening and support services – encouraging early detection and getting conversations going about health and wellbeing.
“This is an opportunity for all our towns and villages to get behind this important cause.”
This year the Mayoral Charity night will also be raising funds for the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre and its dedicated breast care services, including the specialist support provided by McGrath foundation breast care nurses for local women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families.
